The 3970 was created following the success of the exceptional Ref. 2499. The design of the case of Ref. 3970, with its down-turned, fluted lugs, is clearly influenced by the form of the Ref. 2499. One main difference between the two models is the addition of the leap year indicator to the 3 o'clock subsidiary dial and 24-hour indicator to the 9 o'clock subsidiary dial. The Ref. 3970 is now considered a classic by collectors, following in the footsteps of its predecessors Ref. 1518, Ref. 2499. One can distinguish three series in the production of Ref. 3970. A series is defined by variations in case designs or features. Following on from the iconic reference 2499, the 3970 was produced from 1986 to 2004.

Patek Philippe introduced the reference 3970 in 1986 and it has it has assumed a status within the hierarchy of Patek Philippe's most classic and rarest perpetual calendar chronographs. The model was available in yellow, white and pink gold and platinum reference 3970 was replaced by reference 5970 in 2005.
